University of Georgia Extension of Underground Chilled Water
Project Description

Mechanical design and construction phase services for 1,150 linear feet of underground chilled water distribution system consisting of 14, 12, and 10-inch diameter piping for extension of chilled water from District Energy Plant #1 to Brumby and Russell Halls.

SUCCESSES ACHIEVED

  • Project completed with no interruption of chilled water to Brumby and Russell Halls with design of local plant piping configuration to allow seamless transition of CHW sources.
  • Gained approval from Athens-Clarke County (ACC) to shut down Baxter Street for seven weeks despite many obstacles presented with multiple ACC departments.
  • Crossing of Baxter Street and numerous underground utilities on schedule.
  • Installation of new landscape and hardscape that included the transplanting of existing rare crepe myrtles that enabled the finished product to appear as though minimal work was performed.
Project Details
  • Size distribution piping to accommodate additional anticipated future capacity south of Baxter Avenue.
  • Extend new underground chilled water supply and return from District Energy Plant #1 to Russell and Brumby Halls.
  • Provide tie-ins to the existing chilled water systems serving both Russell and Brumby Halls with minimal down time.
  • Demolish existing 400-ton chiller plant in Russell Hall basement and 370-ton chiller plant in Brumby Hall basement to reconfigure space for tie-ins, heat exchangers, and pumps.
  • Provide phased drawings to allow the Contractor to make the chilled water tie-ins during scheduled outages.
