Addition and Renovation

Scope

Mechanical design and construction phase services for the renovation of the existing 80-year-old Grady High School Campus.  Approximately 120,000 sq. ft. of the five-building campus was renovated while more than 100,000 sq. ft. of new building was added.  The buildings included classrooms, a 25,000 sq. ft. gym with locker rooms, a 500-seat theater, a 700-seat cafeteria with associated kitchen, a music building (band, choral and orchestra rooms) with recording capability, and a TV studio.

Special Circumstances

  • All classrooms are served by energy efficient water-source heat pumps.

  • All buildings are equipped with energy recovery ventilators to lower utility costs and HVAC loads.

  • High efficiency (90%+) boilers are utilized for building heating.

  • Acoustically designed Band, Choral, Orchestra Rooms, and Television Broadcast Studio.

  • New campus distribution piping systems for natural gas, domestic water, and fire protection water.  

  • Acid resistant piping system and central acid dilution tank serving the eight science classrooms.

  • All buildings protected by new fire sprinkler systems.

  • Design included phasing requirements necessary to allow school to remain in operation during construction.
