New Learning Center

Scope

New 4-story 120,000 square foot combination classroom and administrative office building.  The HVAC design included air-to-air recovery units, a complete Direct Digital Control System, and a 120,000 CFM smoke exhaust system serving the four-story atrium space. Seven air-handling units were used to match the occupancy zoning of building to maximize On/Off control of air-handling units and energy efficiency. New 370-ton centrifugal chiller and two fully condensing-type 2 MMBTUH boilers part of a stand-alone Central Plant serving this building.

Construction Cost

$2,700,000 (mechanical)

Special Circumstances

  • Mechanical systems designed to accommodate "open" style of circulation spaces in the building and maximized ceiling heights in all classrooms with riser style seating

  • Dual-purpose air handling units designed to meet the "normal mode" HVAC requirements of the Atrium and to meet the 100% make-up air / outside air requirements in the "smoke evacuation mode".  Exhaust air system capability of 120,000 CFM.

  • Siting of Chiller Room, Boiler Room and Cooling Tower Enclosure to accommodate acoustic and aesthetic concerns for new building and surrounding, existing campus environment.

  • Total energy recovery-type air-to-air heat exchangers.

  • Room occupancy-type sensors used to reduce outside air intake by air handling units when classrooms unoccupied.  Automated, variable volume outside air intake control.
